Venice Carnival 2026

Venice Carnival is one of the most exciting events of the year and represents one of the moments when the city shows its most fascinating and theatrical side. With masks, historic costumes, and widespread performances, Venice is transformed into a large open-air stage capable of enchanting visitors from all over the world.

This year's edition, scheduled from January 31 to February 17, will be full of events and initiatives that will animate the streets, squares, and plazas.

The origins of the Venice Carnival date back to the Middle Ages, when the Republic of Venice offered its citizens a long period of celebration before Lent. Wearing a mask meant removing social distinctions and enjoying the city in complete freedom, with dancing, games, and performances.

Over time, Carnival has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Venice, thanks to its iconic masks, 18th-century costumes, and that atmosphere suspended between dream and reality that still makes it unique in the world today.

This year, the theme of the Venice Carnival will be “Olympus - The Origins of the Game,” a tribute to the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics and to the world of myth, competition, and entertainment that combines tradition and contemporary creativity.

Performances and entertainment

Street artists, musicians, performers, and actors will animate the main areas of Venice, from St. Mark's Square to the most characteristic areas of the city, offering moments of surprise and fun at every corner.

The Festa delle Marie

One of the most beloved historical reenactments, celebrating an ancient Venetian tradition with a parade of 12 girls in traditional costumes and moments of great charm.

Masked dances and parties

Carnival is also a symbol of elegance: masked balls, themed parties, and gala evenings allow you to experience Venice as it was in the days of the Serenissima, with music, costumes, and historical settings.

Events on the water and popular traditions

There is no lack of events linked to Venetian tradition, such as costume regattas, craft workshops, and activities dedicated to children.

Visiting Venice during Carnival means immersing yourself completely in its most authentic spirit. We recommend alternating between participating in the main events and enjoying quieter moments of discovery, walking through the less crowded streets or stopping at a pastry shop to eat the famous frittella (or fritoea).
