Regata storica

The Traditional Boats and Celebrations

The day unfolds in two major acts along the Grand Canal, showcasing a fascinating variety of traditional Venetian vessels. The festivities begin early in the afternoon with the breathtaking Historical Procession (Corteo Storico), where dozens of meticulously restored 16th-century style boats glide down the Grand Canal, filled with rowers and costumed figures in period attire. Leading this parade is the legendary Bucintoro, representing the Doge’s ceremonial galley, alongside ornate Bissone and ceremonial parade craft.

Following the pageant, the high-energy competitive races begin, featuring specialized traditional craft in a display of skill and speed. Spectators can admire the Pupparin, fast and sleek boats with a raised stern historically used for maritime surveillance and now rowed by the young champions (Giovanissimi). The women's category (Donne) competes aboard light, agile Mascareta boats, which were traditionally used by masked ladies, while teams power the sturdy six-oared Caorlina workboats that originally transported fresh produce from the islands to city markets. The excitement reaches its peak with the legendary champions' race (Campioni su Gondolini), featuring the Gondolino, the fastest and most challenging craft derived from the classic gondola. All races conclude at the Machina, the grand floating wooden stage erected in front of Ca' Foscari palace, where the top four finishers in each category are awarded the traditional colored flags: red for first place, white for second, green for third, and blue for fourth.

Tips from Our Hotel

To experience the Regata Storica like a local and enjoy the day completely stress-free, a few practical steps will make all the difference. While the entire length of the Grand Canal offers great views, prime spots fill up quickly, so you will want to head early to popular vantage points near the Rialto Bridge, the Accademia Bridge, or along the banks near Ca' Foscari. For those who prefer a guaranteed, front-row view of the intense finish line, reserved grandstand seating (tribune) at Ca' Foscari can be booked in advance online. Finally, please keep in mind that public waterbus (Vaporetto) traffic along the Grand Canal will be suspended or rerouted during the afternoon for the races, so planning your movements around the city well in advance is essential.

Our front desk staff is at your complete disposal to help you check schedule updates, recommend the best spots to watch the procession, and assist you in planning an unforgettable day in Venice!
