GHETTO - 500 YEARS OLD

March 29th, 2016 marked 500 years since the establishment of the Jewish Ghetto of Venice.
To honour the historical anniversary,  to foster the Jewish heritage of the site and guarantee its future as a key religious, cultural and artistic site open to people worldwide, the Jewish Community of Venice and the Municipality of Venice have formed a Committee (“I 500 anni del Ghetto di Venezia”) whose function is to promote and coordinate all events that reflect and respect the spirit of the occasion, in collaboration with national and international institutions as well as individuals.
The overall program of initiatives is going to re-establish the Ghetto, the Jewish quarter where the very word ‘ghetto’ originated, as a meeting point of people, a crossroads of cultures, a gateway to understanding the history of Jewish civilization, and a symbol of freedom beyond walls.
The main events managed and endorsed by the Committee are the exhibition on “Venice, the Jews and Europe” at Palazzo Ducale (June-November 2016) and the transformation of the Jewish Museum.
While the Committe has decided to promote and sponsor three major projects, which will constitute the core framework of the anniversary, this website will showcase many other initiatives organized in Venice to mark and celebrate the local Jewish legacy.

BEYOND THE GHETTO

REDENTORE

The “Redentore” is one of the most deeply felt celebration in Venice as it combines religion with entertainment.

Its tradition dates back to 1577, right at the end of a terrible plague. The Redentore Feast was first held to celebrate the construction of the Palladio’s Redentore Church (i.e. Redeemer Church), built on the Giudecca Island to give thanks for being freed from that plague. Celebrations include the Holy Mass presided by the Bishop and the religious procession to the Palladian Basilica, which can be done via an impressive 330 metre pontoon bridge.

The weekend finishes with the ‘Regata su gondole’, a gondola race organised as part of the "Voga alla Veneta" rowing season.

MADONNA DE LA SALUTE

The "Festa de la Salute" is certainly the feast that best evokes strong popular religious sentiment.

In 1630, more than half a century after the terrible plague of 1575-77, the disease gripped Venice once more. Doge makes a vow to build a church called "The Salute", asking the intercession of the Virgin Mary to end the plague.

Nowadays, thousands of citizens parade on November 21 in front of the main altar of the imposing Church, demonstrating gratitude that links Venetian people to the Virgin Mary.

25 APRIL IN VENICE

In Venice April 25 is celebrated three times. In addition to the Anniversary of Liberation, it is the day of the patron of Venice - the evangelist Mark - and the "Festa del Bocolo".

On the occasion of April 25 in fact the Venetians use to gift a red bloom to their beloved. Legend has troubled love between Mary (daughter of the Doge) and Tancredi (a troubadour) whoenlisted in war. Injured, shortly before his death Tancredi gave to Orlando a bushing caught by the rose garden which was lying so that it was delivered to Mary. Orlando arrived in Venice on the eve of the day of San Marco and gave bloom to the young woman, who was found dead the next morning, with the guide bushing sat on her heart.

HISTORICAL REGATTA

The "Regata Storica" is the main event in the annual "Voga alla Veneta" rowing calendar. This unique sport has been practised in the Venetian lagoon for thousands of years and today it is particularly well-known for the spectacular historical water pageant that precedes the race. Scores of typically 16th century-style boats with gondoliers in period costume carry the Doge, the Doge's wife and all the highest ranking Venetian officials up the Grand Canal in a brightly coloured parade. An unforgettable sight and a true reconstruction of the glorious past of one of most the powerful and influential Maritime Republics in the Mediterranean

FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND.

One night I had a dream.
I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
one belonging to me, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that many times along the path of my life there was only one set of footprints.
I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in my life.
This really bothered me and I questioned the Lord about it:
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why when I need you most you would leave me."
The Lord replied:
"My precious child, I love you and would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

MOST WANTED 'SPRITZ' IN VENICE

“SPRITZ”, the most popular cocktail in Venice!
(Prosecco + Soda Water + Aperol or Campari).
The origins of the spritz are really unknown and find the real ones, today, is not so easy, even if the story says, for what it's worth, in some cases, it is all about the Austrian soldiers passing in Veneto that "stretched" the Veneto wine with sparkling water.
No coincidence there are several versions of spritz: someone uses Campari, someothers Aperol, who as “Spritz” intends wine and sparkling water mixed but in all cases the result is always guaranteed even if the classic recipe spritz is based Aperol.
