Vogalonga

Vogalonga: a Sea of Oars and Tradition

Vogalonga is a spectacular event that brings together thousands of rowers every spring for a non competitive race through the waters of Venice. It is a moment of profound unity, where rowing enthusiasts, professional athletes, and families from across the globe gather to celebrate the lagoon’s fragile ecosystem. The event serves as a powerful peaceful protest against the damage caused by motorboat waves and a tribute to the ancient art of rowing.

Learn the history of vogalonga

The first Vogalonga was born in 1974 from a small group of Venetian friends, including Lauro Bergamo and Sandro Meccoli, who were passionate about traditional rowing. Their goal was to raise awareness about the decay of the city and the impact of motor traffic on the lagoon. What started as a local initiative has grown into a massive international phenomenon: on average, there are over 8,000 participants and multiple different boats filling the canals with color and energy each year.

Celebration and Sustainability

The Vogalonga di Venezia is a true day of environmental advocacy. Because the event is strictly for human-powered vessels, with different kinds of boats like, for example, the traditional caorlina and dragon boats, this day results in a magical experience. The absence of motor noise allows participants to embrace the natural sounds of the lagoon while identifying with the centuries-old maritime culture of Venice. It is a vibrant display of diversity, where rowing clubs from different zones join the race in a shared commitment to preserving the city’s heritage.

Race through the Lagoon

The itinerary covers approximately 30 kilometers, starting from the stunning backdrop of Saint Mark’s Basin. The route winds through some of the most evocative areas of the North Lagoon, including the islands of Sant'Erasmo, Burano, and Mazzorbo, before passing through the Murano glass-making district. The final stretch brings the fleet back into the heart of Venice through the Canale di Cannaregio and the Grand Canal, ending in a triumphant finish.

It’s a genuine opportunity to see Venice from its most authentic perspective, the water, in a spirit of sportsmanship and environmental respect. Book your stay here and experience an event rich in history and passion, an experience you’ll cherish forever!
