Saint Martino
Just as the autumnal freeze starts Venice lights up with a unique, heartwarming tradition. San Martino feast is a charming Venetian celebration that offers a genuine immersion into local life, blending the city's religious history with a delightful kid-friendly flair.
From Soldier to Saint: an act of generosity to bright the world
Known across Europe as a day honoring the charitable Saint Martin of Tours, the Venetian version of this day, celebrated annually on November 11th, has a particularly important local flavor. Historically St. Martin was a Roman soldier famous for cutting his cloak in half to share it with a poor man during a snowstorm. This act of generosity is at the heart of the celebration. In Venice the day is marked by a joyful, noisy procession. Children march through narrow streets and squares, armed with pots, pans, and percussion instruments, chanting rhymes to collect small coins or sweets from residents. It’s a tradition you really can't miss if you want to see the city come alive with joy!
Still nowadays you can hear the famous song:
“San Martin xe ‘ndà in sofita,
a trovar la so novissa,
so novissa no ghe gera,
San Martin xe ‘ndà in galera…”

Saint Martin's pastry
A defining feature of the Festa di San Martino is its transformation into a culinary tradition centered around the iconic San Martino pastry. It’s a buttery, shortcrust pastry shaped like the saint on his horse, with his cloak and his sword; often adorned with a brightly colored royal icing, or chocolate. This edible masterpiece is a striking symbol of Venetian craftsmanship, found in every bakery. This festivity remains a wonderful way to teach younger generations about history and generosity through a sweet treat.
